i expect my burner has dual lasers cos it still plays cds and burns them faultlessly but it cant even read a dvd disc, it is a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GCA-4164B. any suggestions welcome. also is it worth getting fixed (eg. is it an unforced fix) or should i just take another burner?

You are correct in truism that your drive has 2 lasers. It seem one of them is burnt out or misaligned. Don't bother getting it repaired....fresh ones are around $40.00. home search a scam
