im on an 3 yr dated mac g4...it wont recognize 2 external hardrives contained by the 2 usb ports, it only recognize one. is this always the covering or could there be something wrong near my ports? any help would be greatly appreciated. gratitude!

Are the external hard disks USB powered? If so, I cogitate this may be a power limitation issue. Try using a powered USB hub.
If they are *not* USB powered, later maybe both drives hold the same volume designation?
Head into Disk Utility and wipe the disks, using Mac HFS+ format, and rename them. See if that helps!
