What's up beside these pullover settings on my cd/dvd drives?

I enjoy a dell computer/xp that came beside duel cd-r/rw drives. Just bought a Sony dvd rw aw-q170a drive to make dvd back-ups. I've set the jumper every which way and none work. Both on CS doesn't come across to work. Cd set as master, dvd as slave (both on same cable) allows both to read, but the dvd drive won't write. The back of my computer's be opened and closed more times than Tom Cruise's closet door! Any planning?

set the dvd to master and the cd to slave
I have an matured dell optiplex off contained by a back room that uses Cable Select. But you enjoy to go into the bios and select exactly what you are have hooked up. Auto detect doesn't work. If you don't have a device surrounded by that placement (ie. secondary master, inferior slave, etc,) it must be set to none or off, missing, whatever, not to autoselect.
First, determine that the DVD drive is working correctly at adjectives. You mentioned that you can get it to read surrounded by one setup, but not write.

Install the Sony by itself, at the end of the cable and set to master. Then boot and see if it writes. If not, after the drive is bad, or will not work contained by your system period for some pretext.

If it does write, then install the compact disc drive in the middle of the cable and set to slave.
